Kalanamak Rice
Kalanamak Rice
Kalanamak rice is an ancient, aromatic rice variety native to the Indo-Nepal Terai region. Known for its distinctive nutty fragrance, soft texture, and mineral-rich taste, it stands apart from mainstream aromatic rices. The grains are medium to long, typically dark-husked, and turn off-white when cooked. Rich in iron, antioxidants, and micronutrients, Kalanamak is valued both for its heritage status and its nutritional profile. Traditionally used in daily meals, pulaos, and sweets, it offers a balanced, mildly sticky consistency and a low-to-moderate glycemic index, making it suitable for diverse culinary applications.
The quality of Buddha Rice (Kalanamak Rice) has been tested by the Nutri Hyderabad organization on behalf of the government and the agriculture department, in which zinc is found to be 21.5% and iron to be 12%. Whereas in normal rice, iron is found to be 6% and zinc to be 5%. Apart from this, the following nutrients are also found in it:
